Lillie Anzalone, 97

A Taylorsville resident, Mrs. Lillie Anzalone, age 97, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the home of her daughter, Sandra, and son-in-law Edd Holloway, after a lengthy illness. She was born February 6, 1920, the 7th of 13 children born to the late Lester and Sarah Goodlett. She was the last remaining member of that family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lawrence Anzalone, her son, Lester Anzalone, a grandson, Edmond Holloway, and 12 siblings.

Always brave and independent, she left the family farm as a young woman to make her way in the world, first working as a caregiver for those in need. Later she moved to Louisville where she became a topnotch welder at Jeff Boat. IT was in Louisville that she met her future husband, Lawrence Anzalone, a soldier from Boston Massachusetts, soon to be deployed to Germany to serve as a medic during World War II. Upon his return, Lawrence, Lillie and their infant daughter Sandra returned to Boston where Lillie lived many happy, busy years caring for her family, Lawrence, Sandra and two sons, Lester and Wayne. Lillie and her family often attended operatic performances at Symphony Hall, where her father in law, Maestro Alfredo Anzalone conducted the orchestra. Lillie was the only person allowed to trim his hair before his performances and she learned to master Italian cooking so well he preferred many of her dishes to those of his Italian wife. In the summer of 1960, during a vacation to Kentucky, Lester was killed while hunting and the following summer Lawrence passed away. Lillie and her children then moved to Kentucky and settled on a farm where Lillie resumed the outdoor life she loved. She thrived on hard work and every year she would grow a huge garden and give away produce to friends and family. After many years she moved to Taylorsville to be near her children and grandchildren. She lived her life full of enthusiasm for each day. Always kind and optimistic, she took her hardships in stride, never complaining, filling her days with a never-ending list of accomplishments, whether it be gardening, cooking for friends and family or playing her grandchildren, she had a sunny personality and she loved to laugh and have fun. She truly loved life and she loved others, always there to lend a hand and encouragements to those who needed it.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Anzalone, her daughter, Sandra and son in law, Edd Holloway, grandsons, Joe (Renae) Holloway, Kevin (Barbara) Holloway, and great grandsons, Joseph, Gage, Zachary, Brandon, and Trevor Holloway. She was a blessing to those who knew her and is deeply loved and missed by her family.

Sara was born May 1st, 1917, to Steven and Mary (Rice) Allen. She grew up on a farm in Spencer Co. and lived there for the first 90 years of her life, mostly in Taylorsville. She attended Berea College in Berea, KY, married W. S. Day in 1940, and had one daughter, Judy, in 1942. Her careers included running a grocery store, serving as a secretary for the county extension office, and working at People's Bank of Taylorsville, starting as a teller in 1941 and serving as president before retiring in 1985.

Sara was an astute investor, steering clear of stocks unless they paid a good dividend and any investment if she had to wonder how she would get her money back. When she took pictures of her grandkids, she didn't shout "cheese!" but rather "money!" She kept meticulous accounts and records relating to her finances, but she was no hoarder. Her house was neat and tidy but also warm and comfortable.

Sara enjoyed cooking, gardening, travelling, and reading, particularly mysteries of Sue Grafton's Kinsy Millhone Alphabet Series.

She hosted family Thanksgivings for dozens of family members for many years. But she also cooked, on a regular basis, the best fried chicken, chocolate cake, triffle, and custord. She played with her grandchildren, and later her great-grandchildren, with incredible energy well into her 80's.

She maintained her garden, independently, until the age of 90. This included mowing the lawn herself. She travelled the US and the world, including many trips to Germany, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. She also valued her faith, as a 75 year member of First Baptist Church in Taylorsville, where she served for many years as treasurer. She was the oldest living member of First Baptist. She enjoyed many civic organizations, including the Spencer Co. Chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Club.

After reaching the age of 90, she moved to Woodlands Creek Retirement Center in Clive, IA, to be near her daugther and her family.

She is survived by her sister, Jean Ware; grandsons, David (Meg) and Peter (Christine); Son-in-law, Paul; great grandchildren, Joe, Mike, Luke, Hayden, Henry and Ben Bissinger; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family, who remember her fondly. Sara was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Steven, Billy, Joe, and Matilda; husband, W.S.; daughter, Judy; and grandson, John Paul.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Taylorsville, 115 West Main Street, Taylorsville, KY, 40071. Condolences may be expressed online at www.hamiltonsfuneralhome.com.
